Former IBF Lightweight world champion Richard Oblitey Commey’s management has reacted to the Ghana Boxing Authority directive that Commey cannot fight in the name of Ghana since he is suspended
And ahead of his bout against Pedraza last year August, the boxing association warned him to not fight under the flag of Ghana, while indicting him for refusing to pay his statutory dues to support other upcoming boxers.
“The Ghana Boxing Authority has no connection with Richard Commey,” GBA boss Kotei Neequaye told Joy Sports.
“We banned Richard Commey. He said he prefers paying [boxing] development fee to the US authority so we don’t see him as one of the Ghanaian boxers so have no interest in his fight.”
Commey was seen using the Ghana flag and the national anthem was played before the bout which ended in a split draw
The 35-year-old has another title shot on March 25th, 2023, and his issues with the Association haven’t been resolved
Angel FM/TV caught up with one of Commey’s managers in an interview to find out more about the issue
“Richard commey hasn’t been heard, and up until now we don’t know what commey has done,” James Tetteh Mensah said
“The GBA can never order commey to not fight under the flag of Ghana
“And there is nothing they can do about it,
Richard is a Ghanaian, and will always fight as a Ghanaian” he added
Richard has been in the state and preparing for his WBC title fight against American Jose Ramirez
“Richard has been training and preparing hard for this bout, he is focused on the bout, and God willing he will win this one for Ghana
“He’s been fighting Americans in America and winning so this one won’t be any exception, he is not fazed by the home crowd” James Tetteh Mensah concluded.
