Confederation of African Football(CAF) has punished the captain of Arsenal and Gabonese Senior Soccer team, Pierre Emerick Emiliano François Aubameyang for an outburst on social media.
The Disciplinary Board, an independent body of CAF, met by videoconference on 6 December 2020, to review the case brought to its attention.
In a Total AFCON, Cameroon 2021qualifiers match between Gambia and Gabon, the Gabonese national team players were stranded at the airport for more than five hours, meaning that the Gabonese delegation spent the night sleeping on the airport’s floor.
Aubameyang took to his social media handle to record a live video showing how stranded he and his teammates were.
According to CAF, Mr Pierre Emerick Emiliano François Aubameyang has publicly published offensive and degrading material that undermines the honour and image of the Confederation of African Football.
CAF considered Articles 10, 11, 43.1, 46, 82 of the Disciplinary Code of the CAF Statutes & Regulations to layout a punishment for the Arsenal star.
The CAF Disciplinary Board decided to impose a fine of 10,000 USD for breach of the values of sportsmanship and integrity on the Gabonese Football Federation for the regrettable behaviour of the player.
