Accra Hearts of Oak have concluded the first round of the 2022–2023 league season with a dramatic play at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Accra Hearts of Oak defeated Berekum Chelsea 3-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium in match day 17 of the Ghana Premier League on Saturday afternoon to go second in the league log.
Four goals were recorded in the second half after both teams failed to score a goal in the first half.
At the halftime break, Accra Hearts of Oak failed to put a ball into the net of their opponent, Berekum Chelsea. The Phobians could not score from an open play despite dominating Berekum Chelsea and posing a threat to score.
Amankwah Baafi and the newly signed Dieudonne had decent chances in the dying embers of the first half to put the Phobians ahead, but their shots went past the post. Berekum Chelsea had fewer balls with fewer chances arriving at them, but their indecisiveness accounted for their inability to break the game’s deadlock. The first half ended at 0-0.
Hearts of Oak intensified their pressure on Berekum Chelsea after the halftime break but were denied by the Berekum Chelsea goalkeeper. Berekum Chelsea played a very conservative ball but couldn’t hold until their tactical game plan kicked in as Dennis Nkrumah Korsah sent in a great ball, deflecting slowly into the net to give Hearts of Oak the lead.
Six minutes after breaking the game’s deadlock via own goal, Benjamin Yorke penetrated the Berekum Chelsea defensive line to send the keeper the wrong way, scoring the game’s second goal for Hearts of Oak. Berekum Chelsea responded positively to pull one back in the additional minutes of the game, but it wasn’t enough to hold the Phobians.
Hearts of Oak again through Victor Aidoo scored a towering header a minute to end the game at the Accra Sport Stadium to cement the victory for the Phobians. The Phobians have concluded the first round of the 2022–2023 league season with a vital home win.
