Retired referee Joseph Wellington has explained to Halftimegh.com that under-fire referee Emmanuel Tampuri was not dropped from officials for 2020-2021 Ghana Premier League week11 games because of incompetence as our earlier report suggested.
Ghana Football Association has released a list of officiating officials for matchday 11 games without Tampuri, who came under media scrutiny after getting some big calls wrong in Asante Kotoko 0-1 loss to Aduana stars game last week.
Kotoko is reported to have filed a formal complaint at the referee’s review committee at the FA.
Based on this fact, our earlier judgement was that Tampuri was dropped because of the controversy surrounding his performance in last week’s match
However, Referee Wellington speaking to this portal, said it’s far from that
“It is not true that Emmanuel Tampuri was not dropped because of incompetence”-he said
“The referees are many so all of them can’t get a match to officiate every week, that is the reason he (Tampuri) is not on assignment this coming weekend.
On Kwame Poku’s penalty incident the former FIFA/CAF referees instructor conceded that it was a clear penalty but a difficult one for the centre referee to see because of the nature of the incident and he didn’t have the opportunity for replays as people did
Mr Wellington called on Ghanaians to support our referees to grow because they lack a lot of officiating gadgets that are needed to improve them so to avoid some of these wrong calls.
